The Challenge

A smart company understands its greatest asset is its employees. Unfortunately, that asset can also be a company's greatest cost.

Various studies have proven that overweight and obese employees create a much greater cost to an employer than normal weight employees. In fact, one study provides the following stats: "Normal weight employees cost on average $3830 per year in covered medical, sick day, short-term disability, and workers' compensation claims combined; morbidly obese employees cost more than twice that amount, or $8067, in 2011 dollars." (Van Nuys K, Globe D, Ng-Mak D, Cheung H, Sullivan J, Goldman D. The association between employee obesity and employer costs: evidence from a panel of U.S. employers. Am J Health Promot. 2014 May-Jun;28(5):277-85. doi: 10.4278/ajhp.120905-QUAN-428. PMID: 24779722.)

Studies have also proven that companies who offer weight management programs and incentives experience significant health cost savings, higher employee productivity, as well as higher employee satisfaction.  (Heinen L, Darling H. Addressing obesity in the workplace: the role of employers. Milbank Q. 2009;87(1):101-122. doi:10.1111/j.1468-0009.2009.00549.x)

My focus with my corporate partners is to provide a supplemental weight management program that specifically supports their obese employee population. This is the population that is the most costly, but also the most hesitant to participate in wellness initiatives. Obese individuals suffer from shame, embarrassment and fear of judgment, so they hesitate to participate in programs for fear of publicly failing and being judged by their peers.

Most wellness programs focus exclusively on changing behaviors without first addressing the mental and emotional barriers to making those changes. I can almost guarantee that your obese employees know more about weight loss than the rest of your employees combined. Knowledge isn't their problem. Belief that they are worthy and capable at succeeding at weight loss is their problem. That's where my programs come in. My Love Yourself Lean online program focuses on transforming the thoughts, words, and long-held beliefs that have perpetuated their weight problem. Once your employee transforms their mind, they will be willing and able to participate in your wellness initiative to transform their body.
